Cold Sores


A cold sore is also known as a fever blister. This is caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1. You can catch the herpes simplex virus by kissing someone with the virus, sharing drinks and toothbrushes, etc. Stress may also be a factor.

  • Keep the cold sore dry and clean. Don't mess with it.
  • A water based zinc solution applied as soon as you feel the tingly feeling helps the healing time
  • You might want to replace your toothbrush, because the herpes simplex virus likes to harbor in moist places. It is also good to replace your toothbrush because it will lower the chances of reaccurance of a cold sore.
  • Cover your cold sore with petroleum jelly. This will help protect it.
  • Instead of using large tubes of toothpaste, use the small tubes. You will be sure to replace the toothpaste regularly.
  • Try rubbing alcohol or witch hazel. This will help dry it up.
